TETANUS IS MORE THAN JUST RUSTY NAILS

Some people think you can only get tetanus from stepping on a rusty nail. The truth is, stepping on a rusty nail is just one of the many kinds of wounds that can lead to a tetanus infection.1

Any type of injury that breaks the skin can lead to a tetanus infection if1,2:
• Tetanus enters the body through broken skin; and
• The person is not properly vaccinated against tetanus

Some common types of wounds that can lead to a tetanus infection include1:

• Body piercings
• Lacerations
• Cuts
• Surgical wounds
• Injection drug use
• Animal bites
• Splinters
• Tattoos
• Scrapes
